Sizing an open-channel woodchip bioreactor to treat nitrate from agricultural tile drainage and achieve water quality targets

چکیده
Abstract Woodchip bioreactors are capable of removing nitrate from agricultural runoff and subsurface tile drain water, alleviating human health hazards harmful discharge to the environment. Water pumped sumps nearby ditches or channels could be cost-effectively diverted through a woodchip bioreactor remove prior into local waterways. Sizing achieve targeted outlet concentrations within minimum footprint is important minimizing cost. Determining necessary size should involve hydrological component as well reaction type rates. We measured inflow outflow in open-channel over 13-month period used tanks-in-series approach model hydrology estimate parameter values for kinetics. Both zero-order first-order kinetics incorporating Arrhenius equation temperature dependence were modeled. Temperature and Substrate Control Woodchip Bioreactor Performance in Reducing Tile Nitrate Loads in East-Central Illinois.
Tile drainage is the major source of nitrate in the upper Midwest, and end-of-tile removal techniques such as wood chip bioreactors have been installed that allow current farming practices to continue, with nitrate removed through denitrification. There have been few multiyear studies of bioreactors examining controls on nitrate removal rates. We evaluated the nitrate removal performance of two...

ABSTRACT-Nowadays farmers often use N-fertilizers to increase crop yield, but they lost quickly by leaching causes environmental contaminations that reported as most important source of pollutant. Although biofilters are useful for removing nitrate from drainage water, but many researches show that they need an external carbon source to sustain denitrification. Many researchers study on differe...
متن کاملNitrate in tile drainage of the semiarid Palouse Basin.
Topographically heterogeneous agricultural landscapes can complicate and accelerate agrochemical contamination of streams due to rapid transport of water and chemicals to poorly drained lower-landscape positions and shallow ground water. In the semiarid Palouse region, large parts of these landscapes have been tile drained to enhance crop yield. From 2000-2004 we monitored the discharge of a ti...
متن کاملPhosphorus retention in a newly constructed wetland receiving agricultural tile drainage water.
One measure used in Sweden to mitigate eutrophication of waters is the construction of small wetlands (free water surface wetland for phosphorus retention [P wetlands]) to trap particulate phosphorus (PP) transported in ditches and streams. This study evaluated P retention dynamics in a newly constructed P wetland serving a 26-ha agricultural catchment with clay soil. Flow-proportional composit...

Extensive network of tile drains present in the Midwest USA accelerate losses of nutrients to receiving ditches, rivers and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico. Nutrient inputs from agricultural watersheds and their role in affecting water quality have received increased attention recently; however, benthic sediment-nutrient interactions in tile-fed drainage ditches is still a matter of active res...
